HES welcomes European Heritage Heads to Edinburgh

The 16th European Heritage Heads Forum, held this year in Edinburgh and hosted by Historic Environment Scotland (HES), has opened today (Thursday 18 May).

The Forum, which runs for the next two days at the capital’s Royal College of Physicians, brings together national heritage heads drawn from across the countries of the European Union, the European Economic Area, and the member-states of the Council of Europe, who work in areas including built heritage, landscapes, and archaeology.

The central theme for this year’s event is: “Fit for the future: How has the pandemic changed cultural heritage?” with the conference exploring how the COVID-19 outbreak has changed cultural heritage and what this means for its management and development moving forward. The event will also focus on key opportunities and challenges for organisations working across the European heritage sector, providing an opportunity to reflect and discuss how they have adapted, as well as looking ahead to recovery and renewal, and continuing to build resilience.

The event will also include a focus on the heritage implications for Ukraine, following the joint statement published by the heritage heads last month and is being opened by Neil Gray, Minister for Culture, Europe and International Development and Minister with special responsibilities for Refugees from Ukraine.

Ukraine’s Deputy Minister for Culture and Information Policy, Kateryna Chuyeva will also join the event virtually for a session entitled: Ukraine: Cultural Heritage in Wartime, which will include a short video showing the destruction of cultural heritage in Ukraine because of the current conflict. Ms Chuveya will also join the conference via video link for a Ukraine discussion session on the closing day (Friday 20 May) chaired by Joakim Malmström, Director General of the Swedish National Heritage Board.
